You don't have to do shit

6:47 PM.

My son is mid-meltdown. He's overtired, doesn't want his bottle, and needs a diaper change.

Dishes from dinner are still stacked in the sink.

I've got 3 client check-ins I haven't answered and an Instagram post I promised myself I'd finish tonight.

I haven't called my dad in two days and a tornado just touched down on the South Side of Chicago with 100mph winds.

And I have dozens of unanswered text messages.

Welcome to being a dad. A husband. A business owner. A son. A friend. And, allegedly, a healthy human being.

As a dad, I have to change poopy diapers, feed a kid who fights me on every bite, and run bath time and bedtime like a hostage negotiation.

As a husband, I have to support my wife, keep her stocked in fresh roses (no baby's breath, she's specific), take out the trash, and handle most of the cooking and dishes.

Trust me, it's better for everyone this way.

As a business owner, I have to pay taxes, manage the books, post content, sell, build landing pages, message clients, run form checks, and grind through weekly reviews.

As a friend and a son, I have to answer texts, return emails, show up when people ask, and call my dad.

As a healthy person, I have to track my macros, train multiple times a week, take my vitamins, hit my protein, and actually sleep.

All these have-tos.

It's enough to make you want to scream, tell everyone to f*** off, and disappear into a WWII documentary with a bottle of Duckhorn Napa Cab and a blanket.

(Hey, don't threaten me with a good time! 🤣🍷)

The $20,000 Wake-Up Call

I remember when I started my personal training business...

This sounds ridiculous in retrospect, but I had no idea I owed taxes on the money clients paid me.

When you're first starting out, you don't know what you don't know.

It's a circus, and you're the guy in the middle juggling while balancing spinning plates on your hands, feet, and head.

I was barely scraping by. The first few weeks, I slept on a buddy's couch while I rented out my own apartment on Airbnb just to cover rent.

But seven months in, business was good. Around $10K a month in revenue (gross, not net, for the business majors in the room).

Then April hit, and my accountant delivered the news: I owed $20,000 in taxes to the federal government.

I was pissed. Genuinely angry and annoyed.

How is this possible?

I'm the one risking everything here, quitting my job, putting it all on the line to chase the American dream, and I get taxed heavily and penalized on top of it?

What the hell is a self-employment tax anyway?

I spent a few days stewing in it. Then I randomly read The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday.

Immediately, something shifted.

The day I had to write the check, I walked into the gym with a huge smile on my face. Luigi at the front desk stopped me. "What are you so happy about?"

"I have to pay my taxes today," I said.

"Most people hate paying taxes. Why are you smiling?"

"Because I owe $20,000. That means my business is a success. I've got paying clients doing work I love. I turned a real profit in year one. I'm about to write the biggest check of my life, and I'll still have plenty left over. I'm going to be fine."

That's the moment it clicked.

I hadn't felt that alive since I landed my first paying client.

Here's the takeaway:

Shift your mindset from I have to, to I get to, and everything changes.

Nobody's Holding a Gun to Your Head

I wanted kids...

My wife and I spent a small fortune on IVF and surrogacy. So, how exactly am I supposed to sit here and complain that I have to change a diaper?

If I left, my wife would have a line of guys ready to take my place. I'm the lucky one who put a ring on her finger.

I'm the guy who quit his consulting job to chase a life in fitness.

I want to be the most fit guy in every room I walk into. I want to see my abs in the mirror and set the standard for my son like my dad did for me.

Nobody's forcing my hand.

Nobody's got a gun to my head making me pay taxes, workout, or show up for my family. Plenty of people skip all of it.

Just ask Wesley Snipes how that worked out with the IRS.

There are consequences either way. Everything in life is a trade-off.

But life is too short to complain and walk around pissed off all the time about all the things you "have to" (cough) "get to" or better yet — choose to do.

So next time you catch yourself saying "I have to," check yourself.

You don't have to do shit.

You chose this life. You get to do all of it.

And look, as the son of a former Chicago cop, I was never skipping that tax bill.

I don't want those consequences so I was writing that check either way.

But better to write it thinking, "How cool is it that I get to cut a $20K check because my business is thriving?"

Than to write the same check, for the same amount, pissed off the whole time.

The action doesn't change. Only how you feel about it does.

But this isn't a one-time deal.

You can't shift your mindset once and you're set forever. It's like training...

You get on a streak, everything clicks, and then life punches you in the face.

Mine did the week my son was born and sleep disappeared.

It takes a constant reminder. Often, a daily fight.

But the tradeoff is worth it.

🔥 Client of the Week: Karthik & Harini

Two demanding careers: Karthik's an anesthesiologist, Harini was launching a new franchise when they joined.

Two kids, and health quietly sliding down the priority list, until a cardiology scare made it impossible to ignore.

video preview

In 4 months:

  • 🔥 Harini lost 14 lbs and 3.5% body fat.
  • 💪 Karthik lost 15 lbs and 3 inches off his waist.
  • 🚀 No more afternoon energy crash.
  • 🧠 Fitting into shirts and dresses they hadn't worn in a decade.

How we did it:

  • Planned around travel instead of abandoning the plan
  • Recomposed a vegetarian, carb-heavy diet around protein
  • Custom Tonal programming built around their schedule, skill level, and goals

The real win wasn't the scale.

It was turning a health scare into a system their whole family now lives, and works out, by.

Remember, action is the difference between dreaming and succeeding.

See you next week.

Time for action,

You've waited patiently for the payoff. Like a teenage boy watching an entire full length movie on Skinamax back in the 90s waiting patiently for just for a glimpse of cleavage... Now is the moment you've been waiting for: my take on the 25 new Tonal moves. [cigarette in mouth] Hold on to your butts: (Name the movie for bonus points.) The Scoreboard 🔥 Must-try: Suitcase Bulgarian Split Squat, Suitcase Split Squat, Kickstand RDL, Bodyweight Good Morning 👍 Solid adds: Barbell Back Squat,...

If you haven't seen the BIG news... Tonal dropped 25 new exercises last week. The "hero" of the new moves pack is the Barbell Back Squat, which people have been requesting since I first started with Tonal many years ago. Here's the official post from Jenna of Tonal's Content & Performance Team posted on Reddit. Credit where credit is due. This is a great update, Tonal users are celebrating across the board, and my clients are pumped. In the post, Jenna walks through a rigorous 5-part process...

Read Time: ~3 minutes I made a reel recently comparing the Tonal spotter to a half-drunk frat boy eyeing the girl on the stair-stepper in short shorts. Like the frat boy, it barely pays attention to what you're doing. Then it kicks in, if you're lucky. And only if you know to engage it by coming to a complete stop. Then, the second you get the rep up, it vanishes again like a fart in the wind. No human spotter in a gym works that way. They don't wait for the bar to stop moving before stepping...
